Abstract:
In Dutch fruit-growing planting densities have been raised in general from a level of 1 000 – 1 200 trees per hectare to 2 000 – 2 500 trees per hectare.
This intensification resulted in a higher production and lower labour requirements per hectare thus inducing an increase in labour productivity.
Planting more trees per hectare is often combined with changes in the planting system.
The possibilities and the results of a further increase of the number of trees per hectare and the implements of changes in the planting system are discussed.
