THE MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR HORTICULTURE (MISTU)

Abstract:
The tasks of a grower can be divided roughly into two groups of activities. At first there are the activities due to the execution of the work, the labour operations such as planting, picking, sorting, etc. The grower puts his labour supply at the disposal of the enterprise, in the same way as the other labourers. Secondly he does use his creative mind by planning and running his enterprise: he takes decisions about the planning of the production and the work-sequence, he collects information about different topics from literature, he discusses with growers and advisors, he buys new machinery, etc. Especially for a good management in future, these second area will increase in importancy, new technologies, complicated cropping systems, rapid changes in the market, etc. cause that the grower has to taken often and more complicated decisions. These changes in inner and outer environment asks much more of the growers capacity, not only of his technical knowledge, but moreover of his social and economical skillness.

The grower therefor needs a greater scala of management instruments and techniques, management tools and skillness which assist the grower by an effective management. For this reason it's necessary, that the Research Institutes and Advisory Service develop (scientific) management tools. The Advisory Service has an order to advise the growers, but in future more stress has to be led on the "permanente education" of the enterprisers. The growers
