In vitro cultivation of Orthosiphon aristatus sprout culture (IOSC) allows harvest of this plant at any situation regardless climates condition and seasons.
In addition, a rapid growth can be combined with sustainable secondary metabolisms.
In this study, the antioxidant activities (AAs) of methanol, ethanol, and water extracts of IOSC using elicitation of jasmonic acid (100 M) and yeast extract (5 g L-1) were evaluated by two antioxidant assays, 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC). In addition to the AA of IOSC extracts, the total phenolics, flavonoids and flavonols were measured in the extracts.
An increase in AA from three solvents tested and in rosmarinic acid accumulation was detected in IOSC extracts samples after their exposure to yeast extract or jasmonic acid.
A correlation between AA and rosmarinic acid content was observed.
In addition, a relatively high AA, total phenolics contents, flavonoids and flavonols from methanol IOSC extracts of cell cultured plants were demonstrated.
These results revealed that adding up elicitors to the IOSC enhanced rosmarinic acid synthesis that make relatively higher AA and methanol extracts exhibited the highest extraction ability for both antioxidant assays as well as the total phenolics, flavonoids and flavonols.
