Abstract:
In a series of comparing distillations according to European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.
Eur.) and German Pharmacopoeia 7th Edition (DAB 7) the yields of essential oils are the same in the case of Anisi fructus, Carvi fructus, Foeniculi fructus, Curcumae xanthorrhizae rhizoma, Anthemidis flos, Menthae piperitae folium, Absinthii herba, Thymi herba.
The use of conversion factors is not necessary.
The average value obtained from Matricaria flowers using the method of Ph.Eur. was found to be about 15 per cents higher than using that of DAB 7. For measuring the essential oil content of Melissa leaves the apparatus of DAB 7 must be applied.
Distillation of Salviae leaves, Juniper berries and Orange peels brings a lower yield.
Possible reasons are discussed.
Loss of xylene during hours of distillation must be calculated by a formula for to get real values.
The value after half an hour according to Ph.
Eur. is wrong.
