AN ATTEMPT TO ESTIMATE POTENTIAL PRODUCTION OF VOLATILE TERPENES FROM THE LOGGING BY-PRODUCTS OF SILVER FIR (ABIES ALBA MILL.) IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA

Authors:   M. Penka, J. Cermák
Abstract:
Silver fir, Abies alba Mill., despite the relatively low proportion of its representatives in the commercial forest stands of Czechoslovakia, is a rich resource of terpenes utilizable for purposes of national economy; concerned are the by-products in association with the harvesting of large timber, namely the shoots and needles. With introduction of mobile mechanisms into the processing, such as the distillation apparatuses, this kind of exploitation of minor forest produce does not result in any impoverishment of organic matter within the ecosystem, for the material processed (distilled) as describet above can be left in the place (forest). But in view of the fact that silver fir tends to retreat in our stands, it appears urgent to commence processing this valuable raw material without further delay, while its utilization warrants profitableness with respect to the trend towards concentration of logging operations.
