THE INFLUENCE OF GA3 PRE-SOWING SEED TREATMENT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PLANTS AND DRUG VALUE OF DATURA INNOXIA MILL. AND ATROPA BELLADONNA L.

Authors:   K. Suchorska, A. Ruminska
Abstract:
Some difficulties with long and irregular sprouting of Atropa belladonna and Datura innoxia in the field prompted us to enter upon investigations on the stimulation of the process of seed germination. We examined a number of physical and chemical stimulators influencing the interruption seeds dormancy. The best results were obtained by means of GA3.

The experiments were being conducted in 1976–78 in the laboratory condition, as well as in the field. We investigated the influence of GA3 pre-sowing seed treatment on their germination, sprouting, development of seedlings and their weight and contend of alkaloids.

Under the influence of pre-sowing GA3 /500,1000 and 1500ppm/ seed treatment in the laboratory conditions the number of sprouted seeds of Datura innoxia increased 3 time, and Atropa belladonna -2,5 times.

In bath species germination occurred earlier, where- as the seeds from the controlled combination germinated irregulary for a long time. The weight of Datura innoxia seedlings increased 6 times and Atropa belladonna about 3 times.

The results of the laboratory experiments were confirmed in the field. The number of plants per 1 m2 increased more than 50% in relation to the controlled group. The germination of the treatment seeds was also accelerated and more even. The yield of Datura innoxia and Atropa belladonna herb in treated plants was about 50% higher. No influence of GA3 on the content of alkaloids was found.
