Abstract:
The cross protecting effect of some mild strains of plum pox virus was checked in preliminary experiments carried out in the greenhouse.
These mild strains were inoculated by chip-budding.
The severe challenge strain was inoculated by aphid transmission using the peach green aphid, Myzus persicae.
The results indicate a protective effect of the mild strains.
Protection varies with, the nature of the mild strain but in each case the protected trees did not show the severe symptoms usually induced by the challenging severe strain.
Symptoms appeared intermediate in intensity and the incubation period was longer than in the unprotected plants
