ISHS Acta Horticulturae 93: Symposium on Quality of Vegetables

POST HARVEST FACTORS AFFECTING KEEPABILITY OF FRESH MARKET TOMATOES

Authors:   S.P. Schouten, H.W. Stork, H.G.A. van Esch
Abstract:
Complaints about strongly decreased keepability lead to research on causes of this phenomenon. It appeared, that the harvest/ grading line at the grower's i.e. picking, filling the bulkbin and grading, can strongly reduce keepability. Tomatoes of different origin vary very much. Red tomatoes were more susceptible for handling than green ones. The most important cause of the reduction of keepability in the harvest/grading line seems repeated falling of the fruits. Further high and low temperatures may influence keepability badly. Packing tomatoes in nets with automatic clippers by exporters shortened their keepability.

The obtained results are discussed and the precautions taken by horticultural practice in the Netherlands to improve keepability are mentioned.
