ISHS Acta Horticulturae 93: Symposium on Quality of Vegetables

HARVEST-TIME IN RELATION TO SOWING-TIME OF SCORZONERA (SCORZONERA HISPANICA L.)

Author:   G. Vulsteke
Abstract:
The influence of the harvest-time in relation to the sowing-time of scorzonera was studied from 1972 to 1976 in West-Flanders, Belgium.

It was found that it was impossible for a late sowing-time to increase the yield by delaying the harvest-time to very late period.

The best results of these experiments were obtained by sowing at the end of April and harvesting at the end of December.

The quality of the canned scorzonera was influenced by the harvest-time especially the appearance of the crystallization for a early harvest and the worse colour for a late harvest-time.

The chemical composition of the scorzonera roots was greatly affected by the harvest-time and little by the sowing-time.
