Abstract:
In Almeria (Spain) the area of greenhouses dedicated to the production of French bean has reduced considerably during the recent years due to more competitive production in neighbouring countries, and after the introduction in 2003 of Bean yellow disorder virus (BnYDV) transmitted by the sweet potato whitefly Bemisia tabaci. Based on the European recommendations regarding crop diversification, a three-year study (from 2007 to 2009) has been conducted in which French bean was produced during spring crop seasons following Integrated Pest Management strategies. There were two replications in conventional greenhouses and two in similar greenhouses but provided with internal fine mesh screenhouses (protected) in order to evaluate the effects of enhanced physical protection on the infestation with B. tabaci and infection with BnYDV. Results show that beans produced in protected greenhouses had 5-10 times less whitefly adults/plant and 10-50 times less BnYDV incidence when compared with crops in standard greenhouses. Overall, infestations with B tabaci, and incidences of BnYDV reduced considerably over the three years leading to almost no BnYDV infection during the 2009 crop season. The results demonstrate excellent control of BnYDV and whiteflies in greenhouses provided with internal screenhouses when compared with conventional greenhouse bean production, and thus provide a solution to the loss of competitiveness caused by these viruses and their vectors.
