ISHS Acta Horticulturae 91: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Floriculture

THE EFFECT OF GROWTH REGULATORS AND TEMPERATURE GRADIENT ON FLOWERING OF SAINTPAULIA IONANTHA WENDL

Author:   L. Dvorská
Abstract:
The development of Saintpaulia ionantha grown under temperature gradient of 14°C day/ 22°C night has been compared with development of plants exposed to constant temperature of ca 22°C. Temperature gradient accelerated flowering about two weeks and brought about formation of further flower stalks. /7–11 per plant as compared with 4–6 in control plants/. Fluctuation of temperature resulted also in bigger leaves of deep green colour. Flowering effects of growth substances such as gibberellic acid /GA3/, kinetin, ethylene and of growth retardants as CCC and ALAR have been also tested. Application of GA3 as a foliar spray increased the number of flower stalks /10–12 as compared to 6–9 in control plants/ and diameter of the flower. The concentration of 10 mg 1-1 can be recommended for such a treatment. Other compounds have been ineffective.
