ISHS Acta Horticulturae 91: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Floriculture

CGA 65993, A NEW GROWTH REGULATOR FOR ORNAMENTALS

Authors:   E. Nussbaum, J. Rufener
Abstract:
CGA 65993, N-(3-chlorophenylaminocarbonylmethyl)-N-2-propenyl-pyrrolidinium-bromide, is a new experimental growth regulator for inhibiting the growth of ornamentals, synthesized in the research laboratories of CIBA-GEIGY Ltd. It has a low mammalian toxicity.

Trials under practical conditions on pot chrysanthemums have shown that CGA 65993 applied at low rates (125–250 ppm active ingredient) causes a uniform and reproducible inhibition of internode growth. This inhibition is independent of environmental conditions (e.g. it is not light-dependent). Depending on the applied rate, any desired degree of growth inhibition can be obtained.

The leaf size of treated plants is not reduced and the leaves are deeper green.

Even with strong overdoses, no phytotoxicity in the form of necrosis has been observed. However, in such cases, some delay in flowering can be expected.

CGA 65993 is taken up through leaves and roots i.e. foliar spray and soil drench applications are possible.

No common name nor Trade Mark has yet been assigned to CGA 65993.
