ISHS Acta Horticulturae 91: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Floriculture

POSSIBILITY OF GIBBERELLIN APPLICATION FOR EARLY FORCING TULIPA GESNERIANA CV. 'LONDON'

Authors:   W.N. Bylov, Z.I. Smirnova
Abstract:
This experiment was performed in aim to outline the possibility of forcing tulip cultivars requiring periods of low temperature treatments for flowering in December and November. For the experiment, tulips of the popular cultivar, 'London' of Darwin hybrids were chosen, which require 20–22 weeks of chilling. The bulbs of tulips were treated with various temperature regimes and were stored at 17°C and 9°C for 10, 16 and 18 weeks. Gibberellin A3 was applied as a dormancy breaking factor and growth stimulator. Results of forcing have shown that in order to obtain good quality flowering plants of cv. 'London' it is sufficient to subject bulbs to 18 weeks of chilling at 9°C and treatment with GA through injection, soaking or watering with 0.1 and 0.5% of GA solution.
