ISHS Acta Horticulturae 9: Symposium Plastics on Crops, Crops under Plastics

A STUDY ON SOME TOMATO VARIETIES AND HYBRIDS CULTIVATED UNDER PLASTIC FILM

Authors:   P. Dr. B. Mànescu, A.P.D. Petrescu
Abstract:
Vegetable crops grown during the cold periods of the year in shelters covered with plastic films, contribute to raising production and make it possible tomato growing throughout the year.

Presently widely spread are the greenhouses and light shelters of the tunnel type covered with a plastic film (4, 6, 9).

The specific temperature, moisture, and light conditions prevailing in the greenhouses and film tunnels, call for some studies and investigations in order to establish the appropriate cultural practices required, as well as the most adequate varieties (7). Most important properties required in these plants are earliness and resistance to diseases (2).

To this purpose the Faculty of Horticulture and the Bucharest Research Institute for Vegetable and Flowers carried out experiments in 1965–1967 concerning the respons of some varieties and hybrids grown in greenhouses and film tunnels.
