| Abstract:
A greenhouse consists essentially of a light-transmitting envelope - normally of glass or of a transparent plastics film - supported by some kind of framework which is normally opaque and therefore obstructs the passage of light to some degree. With plastics films, this framework can be light, cheap and relatively simple as will be shown in other. An alternative method of supporting plastics films which requires, no framework and therefore causes no obstruction is however quite feasible and is currently arousing interest in horticultural circles in a number of countries. This makes use of air pressure to provide the support. The idea of using air pressure to support a flexible fabric building was propounded as long ago as 1911 by Dr. F.W. Lanchester who filed a patent on it (Lanchester, 1919). | |
