| Abstract:
Trees of Prunus domestica ‘Jojo’ were inoculated by grafting with PPV-M, PPV-Rec, and PPV-D strains. Trees of ‘Jojo’ inoculated with PPV-M and PPV-Rec died in the year after inoculation. Plum trees inoculated with PPV-D strain survived graft inoculation. Stunting and partial death of shoots were observed in the first year after inoculation of trees with PPV-D. Only one of four trees inoculated with PPV-D died in the second year after inoculation. Recovering of another three trees was observed in the following years. Necrotic plates were observed on trunks of two trees of ‘Jojo’, and the presence of PPV was confirmed close to necrotic plates both by ELISA and RT-PCR. Very severe systemic symptoms of PPV appeared in leaves and in fruits of the third surviving tree of ‘Jojo’. The presence of PPV was confirmed both by ELISA and RT-PCR in diffuse spots and rings of infected leaves and in fruits showing severe PPV symptoms. Severe systemic infection was observed in the years 2004-2010 in ‘Jojo’ plum tree infected with PPV-D. Low pathogenic PPV-D strain changed the hypersensitive reaction of ‘Jojo’ plum into the systemic reaction expressing severe PPV symptoms. | |
