Abstract:
The third conference of the ISHS - Vegetable Virus Working Group was held at Bari, Italy, from 29–31 August, 1979. The meeting was entitled "Epidemiology and control of virus diseases of vegetables" and was attended by 45 participants from 12 countries.
During the formal sessions 27 papers were presented on the following topics:
Session 1: Soil-borne viruses
- fungus
- nematode transmitted viruses
Session 2: Insect-borne viruses
- non-persistent
- semi-persistent and persistent viruses
Session 3: Production of virus-free plants and problems of recontamination
Session 4: General topics.
Each session was introduced by a general review paper and these papers form the basis of this number of Acta Horticulturae.
In addition to the formal papers, participants were able to see much of the local horticulture in the Bari region during a most enjoyable field excursion.
The excursion, together with informal evening sessions, allowed the participants ample opportunity to cement the excellent relationships that allow considerable interchange of information and material between members of this Group.
During the meeting Dr.
G.P. Martelli from Bari and Dr.
D.G.A. Walkey from Wellesbourne, England, started office respectively as Chairman and Secretary of the Group, and Dr S. Cohen from Bet-Dagan, Israel and Dr M. Conti from Turin, Italy, accepted nomination respectively as Vice-Chairman and Assistant Secretary.
The participants were indebted to Dr G.P. Martelli and his colleagues from the Instituto di Patalogia Vegetale at Bari for the excellent organisation of the meeting and the considerable efforts they made to make the visit a memorable one.
