Abstract:
Arrangement of this symposium started in a working group of greenhouses in Japanese Society of Agricultural Meteorology right after the International Horticultural Congress in Warsaw held in 1974. Several intersociety meetings were held including other three societies, which gave birth to the organizing committee of this symposium.
The international symposium on Potential Productivity in Protected Cultivation was the first meeting of this kind in Asia and aimed to promote technical interaction and cooperation between international research workers in the confrontation of energy crisis.
Because of our geographical isolation from the most countries where protected cultivation is predominant, this symposium was planned right after the Horticultural Congress in Sydney aiming that people attending the Congress could easily stop over on their way back with minimum additional expense.
This plan was approved as one of the international symposium of ISHS at the commission meeting of the symposium on "More profitable use of energy in protected cultivation" held in Sweden in 1977.
The call for technical papers was made under the following headings:
- Technical and physical aspects.
Greenhouse structure, Thermal insulation, Multivariable control, Waste heat utilization, Greenhouse environmental control in arid zone, More profitable use of natural energies.
- Biological aspects.
CO2 enrichment, Root zone environment, Soil sterilization techniques, Photosynthesis and primary production in relation to environmental control.
The call resulted in 42 papers and 26 of those were from abroad.
In view of time scheduled for presentation of papers of single session system in the symposium, we were forced to limit the number of papers from Japan to 16.
Invited papers for the special lectures on "Energy saving strategies in greenhouse industry" were presented by Mr.
K.W. Winspear, Dr.
G.H. Germing, Prof.
C. von Zabeltitz, Mr.
N.Levav, Dr.
J.Damagnez, Prof.
T.Kristoffersen, Prof.
W.Roberts and Prof.
Y.Mihara.
Fifty three participants from overseas and more than 77 Japanese scientists representing seventeen countries attended the technical sessions in Kyoto and most of the foreign participants joined the symposium tour from Kyoto to Tokyo.
In the meeting for special lectures in Tokyo, additional 60 audience joined.
The summaries of all papers and the full papers of lectures written in both English and Japanese were at hand at the opening of the symposium.
A guide book "Protected Cultivation in Japan" was also available to all visitors.
These were valuable for making the symposium a real success.
The closing session with the pannel discussion of important topics selected through the sessions was very enlightening and promissing.
Symposia in their original meaning in two nights at traditional Japanese restaurants in Kyoto helped all participants to build up deep friendship.
Sincere appreciation and cordial thanks are expected to all those who contributed to the success of this symposium, those who presented papers and the participating scientists.
Particular thanks go to the symposium secretary Dr.
T. Takakura and his colleagues; Dr.
T,Ito, Dr.
T.Kozai, Dr.
M.Okada, Mr.
T,Horie, Mr.
M.Hayashi and Miss K.Akuzawa, for their unstinted labor in organizing and conducting this symposium.
Financial supports for this symposium from the Commemorative Association for the Japan World Exposition, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and many other related companies are gratefully acknowledged.
