ISHS Acta Horticulturae 86: Symposium on Fireblight

GREENHOUSE TESTS ON FIREBLIGHT SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SPECIES AND CULTIVARS OF ORNAMENTAL POMOIDEAE

Authors:   H.P. Maas Geesteranus, J. Heyting
Abstract:
Glasshouse experiments were carried out to demonstrate the degree of susceptibility of various ornamental Pomoideae. Two-year old Crataegus-plants originating from seed collected in various areas of Western Europe, as well as from shrubs showing morphological differences, were inoculated at the young leaves. The extent of shoot-wilting varies individually too much to demonstrate any difference in susceptibility among the groups.

Differences in degree of susceptibility of two-year old Cotoneaster-plants could be correlated with morphological characters of the leaves and shoots.

Some Sorbus rootstocks and grafts were resistant, others susceptible. There was no indication that resistant rootstocks influenced the susceptibility of the grafts.

Pyracantha-cultivars showed all degrees from susceptibility to resistance to leaf-inoculation, which did not correlate with the degree of susceptibility of the blossoms.
