ISHS Acta Horticulturae 85: V International Symposium on Apricot Culture and Decline

STUDIES OF APRICOT VARIETIES IN TERMS OF WINTER CHILLING REQUIREMENTS AND BREEDING POSSIBILITIES

Author:   R. GULCAN
Abstract:
Apricot is one of the important fruit species in -- Turkey. The number of trees is just over 10 millions, 4.3 milions of them are budded and others are seedling trees.

According to the latest statistical data (1967–71) the average production per year is 107000 tons. The largest - part of the production is consumed as fresh fruit. The remainder is dried and some of them (about 3500 tons) are exported to the other countries. From the standpoint of production, -- Malatya, Kayseri, Kirwehir, Ankara and Izmir districts are -- the leading areas. Malatya has been one of the most important growing districts especially for its high quality dried apricot varieties (2). Mediterranean coast is an important region for early apricot growing. The production of early fruit is - of prime importance for local consumption for the time being, but exportation of fresh fruits at the beginning of the season could be of great value if suitable varieties are obtained. Mediterranean regions, where the harvesting season starts at the end of May, will be the most suitable area for this -- purpose.

The number of varieties grown in southern region is limited. The quality of these varieties are fairly satisfactory for local market, but they are rather poor for long distance
