ISHS Acta Horticulturae 85: V International Symposium on Apricot Culture and Decline

SIX YEAR RESULTS WITH TWO APRICOT CULTIVARS ON TWELWE ROOTSTOCKS

Authors:   G. COSTA, B. MARANGONI, S. SANSAVINI, R. BORDINI
Abstract:
In recent years studies and researches on apricot rootstocks have proliferated in various countries (DUQUESNE, 1969 and 1970; DUQUESNE and GALL, 1970: EGEA, 1970; JAGER, 1971; PAUNOVIC, 1968; SPIEGEL-ROY, 1969; PLOCK, 1970, 1971, 1972; PRICA, 1970; SANSAVINI, COSTA and MARANGONI, 1970).

The attention given this problem is justified by the great variability in apricot behaviour and consequently by the need to determine both the adaptability of the rootstocks (seedlings or clonals : apricot, myrobolan, peach, european plum, etc.) to varied environmental and geographical conditions as well as the degree of compatibility or incompatibility between these rootstocks and the locally used cultivars.

The problem of incompatibility is linked to the more complex question of decline and die-back and consequently to the pathological factors which may cause these disease processes (virus, mycoplasma, bacteria, etc.). The relationship between incompatibility and these disease processes is still an open question through it has been widely debated in the past at important scientific congresses, such as the XVIth Int. Hort. Congress of Brussels in 1962 and the IVth Int. Symposium on the Apricot and apricot culture in 1968.

This paper is the second report on the behaviour of 12 rootstocks of various species and origins essayed in a typical
