STRAWBERRY AROMA ANALYSIS AS SELECTION TOOL IN BREEDING

Abstract:
In order to breed for complex quality traits like flavour (sugars, acids, aroma patterns), innovative selection tools are required. Metabolite diversity, which occurs in parental lines (e.g., wild germplasm) and their progeny, limits the application of targeted analysis strategies. Rapid, non-targeted analysis strategies, designed to make metabolic data analysis unbiased, were developed to overcome the limitations of targeted analysis. Results of a non-targeted aroma analysis using germplasm from multiple sources and the distribution of the concentration of an important aromatic compound among 189 progeny from a cross are reported.
