ISHS Acta Horticulturae 84: V Africa Symposium on Horticultural Crops

STUDIES ON THE VIRUS DISEASES OF VEGETABLE CROPS IN THE SUDAN

Author:   A.H. Ahmed
Abstract:
Field experiments were carried out for the control of tomato leaf curl virus disease by insecticidal spraying against the whitefly vestor (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) at seedbed and in the field combined with frequent roguing of infected plants.

The incidence of the disease was significantly reduced and the yield of tomato was increased.

In field experiments, fifteen varieties of okra (Hibiscus esculentus) were tested and found susceptible to the okra leaf curl virus disease.

A severe strain of tobacco mosaic virus, isolated from tomato, is reported. A strain of watermelon mosaic virus causing severe damage to cucurbits in the Sudan is also reported.
