ISHS Acta Horticulturae 84: V Africa Symposium on Horticultural Crops

STUDIES ON THE INSOLATION OF TROPICAL HORTICULTURAL PRODUCE

Authors:   June E. Rickard, O.J. Burden, D.G. Coursey
Abstract:
Specimens of seven species of harvested vegetables and five of fruit were exposed to at least 6 hours of solar radiation in Zambia. The internal temperatures recorded commonly reached 40° to 50°C, but in these trials there was no direct relationship between the colour of specimens and maximum internal temperature. There appears to be an inverse relationship between size of specimen and maximum temperature within the same species. Moisture (weight) loss was apparently related to the nature of the cuticle of specimens.

In the comparison between comparable detached and growing specimens of the same species there was very little difference in the maximum temperature attained.
