CHARACTERS IN THE SELECTION OF WINGED BEANS (PSOPHOCARPUS TETRAGONOLOBUS (L) DC) TOLERANT TO DROUGHT |

| Abstract:
The winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (L) DC) is a grain legume on which much research has been focussed recently. However because of its very high demand for moisture, its growth is limited to only the highrainfall areas of the tropics where many other legumes are known and easily cultivated. Over one hundred different cultivars have been developed at the University of Ghana, Agricultural Research Station at Kade to select drought tolerant types suitable for cultivation in arid and semi-arid zones of the tropics. The types suitable to meet the dry conditions of arid zones are those having lower leaf weight ratios, poor nodulation, thin stems and thick pulvuni. In most cases they seed poorly and develop few but thicker underground tubers. Other characters for selection include stem colouration, shape and size of terminal trifoliate leaves, internode lengths, petiole lengths, petiole/internode ratios and phyllotaxy. | |
