Abstract:
The influences of different planting densities on pepper plant growth characteristics and fruit yield were estimated in an experiment conducted in Korca district, located in South East of Albania. The local variety ‘Gogozhare’ was tested in the experiment at several planting densities (11.1, 8.3, 4.8, 3.7 and 2.6 plant/m2) in open field conditions. Common commercial production practices were applied during the growing period. The flowering and fruiting time were recorded and the plant height was successively measured at flowering time, the first harvest and the end harvest time. Ripped, periodically harvested fruits were classified in marketable and non-marketable and weighed separately. The average weight, length and diameter and pericarp thickness of fruits were measured for each experimental plot. Higher planting densities have resulted to taller plants. No influence was observed on flowering time, but in general, a higher yield was recorded in the first’s harvest in higher planting densities. The same was true for the total fruit production. Meantime, less the planting density was, higher yield per plant and higher percentage of marketable fruits were recorded.
