ISHS Acta Horticulturae 83: Symposium on Seed Problems in Horticulture

PERCENTAGE GERMINATION AND THOUSAND SEED WEIGHT AS SOURCES OF ERROR IN PRECISION DRILLING

Author:   A. Bould
Abstract:
The calculation of the sowing rate is based on variables whose determination is subject to error. Using the formula given by Bleasdale (1963) for calculating sowing rate for precision drilling carrot seed, percentage laboratory germination and thousand seed weight are taken as examples to show how the error in their determination can be estimated and how much error their determination may introduce in the estimation of the sowing rate.

The technique used shows the contribution of each variable to the overall variation and so indicates whether a test technique requires improvement to increase accuracy. In addition the importance of being able to estimate the variance of a test method is demonstrated.
