Abstract:
The priming of seeds in the inert osmoticum polyethylene glycol. '6000' can improve the synchronisation of germination and reduce the waiting period between sowing and emergence.
Treated seed can be sown surface dried or after storage in the air dry state.
Different species (even seed lots) respond differently to air drying.
Some lose little or nothing of the benefit of treatment, others much.
One of the most problematical subjects in this respect is celery (at least cv.
Lathom Blanching). Here treatment method, especially duration, is more critical for seeds which are to be dried back than surface dried.
For seeds to be dried back, 7 or 14 days treatment can lead to better results than 10 days treatment.
