Abstract:
Results of emergence trials of eight lots of carrot (Daucus carota) and seven lots of beet (Beta vulgaris) seeds obtained from 18 and 15 sowing occasions respectively were analysed by a technique used to investigate genotype-environment interactions.
Mean emergence of lots varied widely between sowing occasions and seed lots did not differ markedly in their reaction to the environments.
No evidence was obtained which would indicate the successful application of vigour tests to these crops.
Percentage emergence of viable seeds sown (relative emergence) was positively correlated with germination of the seed lots of carrots, while it remained constant in the beet seed lots.
