ISHS Acta Horticulturae 83: Symposium on Seed Problems in Horticulture

DIFFICULTIES IN RELATING PEA SEED VIGOUR TO CROP YIELD

Authors:   H.L. Ensor, G.R. Whittington
Abstract:
The results of developmental work on the electrical conductivity vigour test for peas and of pea variety stock testing trials have been combined in an attempt to relate seed vigour to yield.

Different varieties tend to cover different vigour ranges and may react in different ways to similar vigour values. Various seed stocks within a variety can show differences in inherent yielding ability which will be further influenced by maturity at harvest and plant population.

A careful selection of vigour range and stocks with allowances made for plant population and harvest maturity is considered desirable before vigour/yield relationships can be evaluated in green pea varieties.
