Abstract:
This Symposium, held at the University of Nottingham School of Agriculture, Sutton Bonington, was convened and planned by the late Dr.
Walter Heydecker.
The large number of papers presented are a tribute to his personal magnetism and to the major role that he played in the field of seed research.
The Symposium also attracted many participants who contributed to the lively discussions.
A feature of the Symposium was the Conversazione and Poster Session when the 23 exhibits aroused much interest.
Very many thanks are due to everyone who contributed to the success of the Symposium in so many different ways.
Twenty-two countries were represented: a confirmation, if need be, of the importance to horticulture of this area of research.
Dr.
Heydecker was prevented by illness from attending and the wisdom and humour which he always brought to such occasions were very much missed.
His death later in the autumn at the age of 59 has deprived his colleagues and students of a unique personality and robbed horticulture of a fine teacher and research worker.
This volume of Acta Horticulturae is dedicated
to his memory
