CICERBITA ALPINA: AN ALPINE VEGETABLE RESOURCE TO VALUE

Authors:   P. Fusani, F. Scartezzini, N. Aiello, C. Vender
Keywords:   wild collection, domestication, field management
Abstract:
Cicerbita alpina (Asteraceae) is a European perennial mountain herbaceous plant diffused all over the Alpine system. It can be found in Trentino Region (Italy) where its young edible shoots are traditionally collected in the wild by the local people: consequently, local authorities have recently issued a decree in order to regulate its harvesting. Over the last years, the product has been processed and traded on local markets by some food manufacturers. The CRA-ISAFA of Trento, after solving some problems connected with its reproductive physiology and micro-propagation technique, has started a project aiming at collecting local accessions of the species, their characterization through morphological descriptors, the domestication and the set up of the cultivation techniques. The state of the art of the project is presented here, paying particular attention to propagation and field management.
