PROFILING VOLATILE OIL COMPOUNDS USING HS-SPME, GC-MS DETECTION, A FAST AND RELIABLE TOOL FOR CLASSIFICATION OF BASIL (OCIMUM BASILICUM L.) ACCESSIONS

Author:   J. Javanmardi
Keywords:   Ocimum basilicum L., volatile oil, chemotypes, HS – SPME, GC-MS
Abstract:
The volatile oil composition of 23 Iranian basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) accessions was studied for chemotaxonomic identification using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography - mass spectrometry analysis (HS-SPME, GC-MS). Cluster analysis of accessions based on three major aroma components, linalool, methylchavicol and citral, showed two main groups “Citral-containing” and “Non-Citral-containing” with five distinctive chemotype subgroups: citral; methylchavicol/citral; methylchavicol/linalool/citral; methylchavicol and methylchavicol/linalool. Statistical analysis showed a direct correlation between the appearance of linalool, methylchavicol and the purple color in leaf, stem or flower tissues that represents the presence of anthocyanins.
