MEDICINAL PLANTS OF TRADITIONAL USE IN CASTILLA Y LEÓN (SPAIN) |

| Abstract:
A study of medicinal plants used traditionally was carried out in Castilla y León (Spain). We have revised texts on medicinal plants and ethnobotanic studies published in this region. 35 works were located and revised. These documents were published from 1893 to 2001. Castilla y León is situated in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, with an approximate area of 91,147 km2 and a population of 2.6 million inhabitans. 48 species were selected which were the most frequently used in this area, and represented 8.8% of the medicinal plants mentioned. The most reported therapeutic activities were against digestive troubles (68.7%) followed by respiratory system illnesses (60.4%) and nervous system therapy (33.3%). All of them are used for making pharmaceutical forms of oral administration and 93.7% for topical administration. Flowers are largely most used for medicinal purposes (75%), followed by the leaves (49.9%). 18.7% of these species have magico-religious purposes. | |
