POLYESTER FIBER CONTROLLED HYPERHYDRICITY FOR THREE SPECIES OF SCUTELLARIA: MEDICINAL PLANT

Abstract:
In vitro liquid culture of three Scutellaria species (S. costaricana, S. lateriflora and S. baicalensis) was compared on liquid media and needle-punched fiber; rayon and polyester at two densities - high (250 strokes/min), and middle (100 strokes/min). Fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), multiplication ratio (MR) and hyperhydricity of plantlets were compared. Plantlets immersed in liquid were all hyperhydric, those from rayon were intermediate, and plantlets on polyester fiber were least hyperhydric. Middle and high density fiber plantlets had relatively high biomass (FW, DW) and high MR, along with lower hyperhydricity. A second experiment was conducted comparing liquid medium, agar and middle density polyester at different initial media volumes - 30 ml and 20 ml. Plantlets immersed in liquid had the highest biomass (FW and DW) except for S. baicalensis, but were all hyperhydric. Agar and fiber grown plantlets had relatively high biomass, higher MR and were less hyperhydric compared to plantlets immersed in liquid.
