Abstract:
In the year 2002 an investigation was performed of the possibilities for the out of season strawberry production in the region Skopje and Bitola in the Republic of Macedonia. Planting of two different plant types (waiting bed >17 mm and 13 mm cold stored runner plants – frigo) of the cv. ‘Tudla’ was done at the end of August. A two rows bed system was used with black plastic mulch and drip irrigation. The planting density was 47,000 plants per hectare. The investigation included the following parameters: survival of plants after planting, blossom beginning, harvest time, number of inflorescences and flowers, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight, total yield per plant, growth increment of plants at the end of vegetation, content of total soluble solids and total acidity of fruits. On the basis of the given results it was determined that in Macedonia favorable conditions exist for out of season strawberry production during the autumn period using waiting bed plants ‘Tudla’. Because of the significantly lower yields cold stored runner plants could not be recommended for commercial out of season production.
