Abstract:
Bulgaria and Romania have favourable conditions and old traditions in fruit growing.
During the 20th century both countries passed a similar transition from central planning to a market economy.
The goal of this study was to analyze the current state, trends and future prospects of the Bulgarian fruit growing.
The paper analyzes the following indexes: area, production, average fruit yields, production and consumption per capita and trade balance of main fresh fruit commodities for the period from 1990 to 2005. In Bulgaria, the most analyzed indexes (production, yields, consumption and trade balance) exhibited negative trends, which were most prominent in pome fruit.
With the exception of raspberries and other berries, the fruit production from all species trended to reduce.
The yields in most cultivars decreased in dynamics in Bulgaria.
In contrast, positive trends in the most analyzed indexes in Romania, including yields, production and consumption per capita, were observed.
The study demonstrated a growth of production of raspberries (four folds), cherries (two folds) and plums (38%) in Romania.
In addition Romania achieved a stable and increasing trade balance in cherries.
Currently, it appears that Bulgaria is at an unfavourable position compared to Romania with respect to the future perspectives of growing fruit crops.
Based on the analyzed data, the study also indicated a short term prognosis for Bulgarian fruit growing as well.
