Abstract:
In Italy, the only region where the pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) is traditionally cultivated is Sicily (latitude between 37°10’ and 37°40’). In Bulgaria the pistachio has never been cultivated, but in some areas (latitude 41°59’) the Nettle tree (P. terebinthus) grows, used as pistachio’s rootstock. With the aim to assess the pistachio in non-traditional areas, 4 experimental orchards were established in the regions of Calabria, Lucania and Latium, while in Bulgaria a tentative to introduce the P. vera in the growing area of Nettle tree forestry was under investigation. Vegetative, reproductive and carpological data were observed; in Bulgaria the graft-take of the introducing varieties was recorded. The results carried out in Italy show that moving from South to North, flowering and fruit ripe both delayed and hull colour increases. In non-traditional growing areas the pistachio is affected by new diseases, and in Bulgaria the P. vera leaves resulted as the elective food for some insects. The introduction of P. vera varieties in Bulgaria, was negatively affected by the physiological conditions of the old native Nettle trees used as rootstock.
