ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES IN GROWING OF LATE-RIPENING CHERRIES UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF THE REGION OF CENTRAL BALKAN MOUNTAINS |

| Abstract:
The possibility for prolongation of the period of fresh cherry fruits was studied at IMSA in Troyan, through growing of late-ripening cultivars under the conditions of a cooler climate and greater altitude above sea-level. The following cultivars were included in the study: ‘Regina’, ‘Cordia’, ‘Octavia’, ‘Sylvia’, ‘Lapins’ and ‘Sweetheart’ engrafted on seed rootstock Alcavo. Vegetative and reproductive characteristics of trees were determined, as well as fruit weight, size and chemical composition. The cultivars ‘Cordia’ and ‘Lapins’ had the largest fruits. The phenological calendar of cultivar flowering and ripening was presented. Cultivar ‘Regina’ showed the latest ripening under the Troyan conditions: 7-10 July. Prolongation of 10-14 days was achieved for the period of cherry fruits. Disadvantages of mountain cherry production were indicated. | |
