IDENTIFICATION OF SOME GENETIC RESISTANCE SOURCES TO PLUM POX FOR OBTAINING THE INITIAL MATERIAL NEEDED IN PLUM BREEDING

Abstract:
In Romania, the main problem which has occured in commercial plum orchards is the endemic infection with Sharka, which is one of the most destructive viral diseases. This paper describes the behavior of plum accessions from the germplasm fund to PPV natural infections, serological and biological tests of genotypes in order to identify the valuable forms and use them like initial material in the plum breeding program. The study was carried out in the national plum collection which consists of 566 genotypes including 8 wild species, 183 autochtonous cvs., 319 foreign cvs. and 56 promising hybrids, using a 4 grading scale: (-) 1 – no attack; (+) 2 – slight attack; (+) 3 – mid attack; (+) 4 – severe attack. So, despite of the very high infection pressure in the field collection there are some varieties which did not present any obvious specific symptoms of PPV (on the leaves or fruit) as ‘Grase de Becz’, ‘Grase de Pesteana’, ‘Ciorasti de Mehedinti’, ‘Rosior de Densus’, ‘Negre de Bilcesti’, ‘Porumbele’, ‘Boambe de Leordeni’, ‘Negre de Toamna’, ‘Buburuze’ (old local varieties), ‘Flora’, ‘Carpatin’, ‘Ialomita’, ‘Alina’, ‘Roman’, ‘Agent’ (new Romanian cultivars), ‘Can’, ‘Wilhelmina Spath’, ‘Peche’, ‘Belle de Louvain’, ‘Kirke’ (introduced foreign varieties) and seven wild species. It is apparent that, by symptomatological evaluation, the same local varieties are tolerant to PPV and it is a strong reason to believe that they include in their heredity a multigenic structure which can provide moderate levels of resistance or tolerance to at least some strains of Sharka.
