GENETIC RESOURCES OF SMALL FRUIT CROPS IN BULGARIA

Authors:   R. Boycheva, N. Stoyanova, D. Domozetova, A. Blagov, V. Kondakova
Keywords:   genetic resources, small fruit crops
Abstract:
Together with the creation of the Experimental Station of Small Fruit Crops, Kostinbrod now belonging to the Institute of Agriculture, Kyustendil as the Department of Berry Breeding and Technologies, the necessity of sustaining and investigation of genetic resources at the main small fruit crops was realized. This wealth is a result of the introduction and breeding activity of strawberry and raspberry cultivars. Evaluating its high meaning continuously a database is collected about the biological and economical qualities of the cultivar types expressed at the concrete conditions. Besides the classic methods for investigation, biotechnological and molecular methods are used to evaluate genetic resources. Valuable complex donors were chosen and successfully used in breeding activity for the creation of Bulgarian cultivars and candidate-cultivars of raspberry and strawberry. The obtained new gene types are base of the hybrid gene pool for large fruits, yield, taste qualities and remontantability. Cultivar structures are renovated and enriched on the basis of competitive cultivar testing.
