Abstract:
Several hybridizations were carried out at Embrapa Cassava & Tropical Fruits involving the botanical varieties: Ananas comosus var. erectifolius; Ananas comosus var. bracteatus and Ananas comosus var. ananassoides. This work aimed at evaluating the F1 hybrids from one of these crossings, Ananas comosus var. ananassoides × Ananas comosus var. erectifolius. The plants obtained are under field conditions and some evaluations have been done to select hybrids with specific characteristics to be used as potted plants, cut flowers, landscape plants (garden) and ornamental mini fruits. Some variables were considered such as plant size, color of leaves and fruits (syncarp and crown), crown and syncarp length ratio and peduncle length. In addition, specific morphological descriptors have been applied to characterize ornamental pineapple plants and to give support for possible subsequent processes on intellectual property rights. Results showed that the crossing Ananas comosus var. ananassoidess × Ananas comosus var. erectifolius provided plants to be used as cut flower, cut leaves and garden plants. No genotype showed characteristics adequate for use as potted plant, mainly due to excessive size. The segregation for growth habit and leaf color was observed and discussed. These genotypes are currently under clonal evaluation to determine the stability of the selected traits.
