Abstract:
From 1993, the Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Investigation (Corpoica) assumed the investigation and technology transference of vegetables through the Plan of Modernization of Horticulture.
Corpoica has developed investigation principally in the Center of Investigation (C.I.) La Selva and C.I. Tibaitatá. The studies have been focused on the production of tomato under protected conditions in thematic areas, such as genetic resources, evaluating imported materials for fresh consumption and processing, technical recommendations for agronomic farm management and integrated pest management based on the application of strategies of clean production and Implementation of Good Agricultural Practices.
Further emphasis was made on biological and mechanical control of the perforator of tomato fruit Neoleucinodes elegantalis, production of tomato and lettuce with plastic soil coverages, search of biological controllers for the control of diseases (Trichoderma and yeasts), integrated management of soils and water with emphasis on the determination of water required for the cultivation under protected condition in zones of cool climate.
Other aspects were the response of tomato to the inoculation with native stocks of Azotobacter spp. and mycorrizas, evaluation in laboratories and greenhouses of vegetable extracts of barbasco (Pyllantus sp.), marigold (Tagetes patula) and seed of neem (Azadirachta A. Juss.) for the control of nematodes Meloidogyne javanica and Fusarium oxysporum. There are different universities that have realized important studies in tomato, principally under the form of thesis as the National University of Colombia, University Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Military University New Granada, Pontifical University Javeriana, University of Quindío, University of Caldas, University of Antioquia and Andes University, among others.
Also, private companies encourage the technological improvement of vegetable growing, principally the seeds importers introducing and evaluating imported materials, selecting those of major adaptation to the conditions of every producing zone and with resistance to limiting diseases, and other companies (irrigation, fertilizers, agrochemicals, bio-inputs, among others).
