PACLOBUTRAZOL AND AMMONIUM AND POTASSIUM THIOSULPHATES IN MANGO 'HADEN'PRODUCTION

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of paclobutrazol (PBZ) alone or combined with ammonium thiosulphate (ATS) or potassium thiosulphate (PTS) on mango (Mangifera indica L.) ´Haden´ production. The trial was carried out over two years at Experta Experimental Station, ubicated at Maracay, Aragua state, Venezuela. The zone characterized by a mean temperature of 25°C, annual precipitation of 900 mm and 450 masl. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with five replicates. Each replicate was a plant. Fourteen treatments were applied: Control, PBZ alone (10 ml / tree), PBZ plus ATS at 0.5; 1.0 and 2.0% and PBZ plus PTS at 1.0; 2.0 and 4.0%. To complete the other twelve treatments, the last six were applied 60 and 90 days after PBZ had been applied. The treatments were applied in both years. The variables evaluated: fruit number per plant, fructification index, and yield per plant, per canopy lateral surface and per stem cross section. The treatments showed no statistical differences for any of the variables studied. However, mean values of ATS treatments were higher than PTS treatments for all variables. There was a reduction of mean values in almost all variables for the second year, except in fruit number per plant and fructification index for mean values of PTS treatments. The results suggested a positive effect of nitrogen on the yield of mango ´Haden´. It is no recommendable to use PTS at 4.0%, because of burning the young leaves and the margin of old leaves.
