ISHS Acta Horticulturae 820: VIII International Mango Symposium

MANGO SELECTION AND BREEDING FOR ALTERNATIVE MARKETS AND USES

Authors:   R.J. Campbell, G. Zill
Keywords:   Mangifera indica, Mangifera species, new cultivars, specialty fruit
Abstract:
Modern selection and breeding programs for mango have focused on cultivars with exceptional production, red color, disease resistance and extended shelf life. These criteria are justified by the identified needs of the growers and of the world-wide mango market. However, there are alternative markets and uses for the mango that warrant other criteria such as tree growth habit, flavor or specialized niches. The current paper describes a selection and breeding effort conducted over the past 15 years to promote and develop mango cultivars for estate and patio culture. The selection program has focused on dwarf and semi-dwarf scion cultivars from several mango-growing regions with exceptional disease resistance, fruit quality or specific ethnic appeal. The cultivars include ‘Cogshall’, ‘Fairchild’, ‘Graham’, ‘Ice Cream’, ‘Mallika’, ‘Manilita’, ‘Neelum’ and ‘Rosigold’. These cultivars possess superior horticultural traits which allow them to be successfully marketed within South Florida, USA as estate and patio trees contributing to this multi-million dollar industry. The breeding effort began over 15 years ago with the goal of selecting mangos with superior flavor, production, appearance and disease resistance for this same estate and patio mango market. Mango seeds were collected and planted from maternal parents with desired characteristics, growing in close proximity to desirable male parents. Seedlings were screened by leaf aroma and horticultural traits, leading to a field population of thousands of candidate seedlings. Evaluations have been conducted for the past 5 years with an initial selection population under propagation for further trial.
