Abstract:
Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is grown in virtually all tropical and sub tropical countries.
In Kenya it is an important food and cash crop.
However, despite its importance, its full production potential has not been realized partly because of lack of suitable cultivars particularly for mid-altitude areas.
Although some world commercial cultivars are currently grown in these areas, they have shortcomings, which limit their production.
Consequently, cultivar evaluation program was initiated in 2001 with a view of coming up with more suitable cultivars.
Two improved cultivars introduced from Florida (cultivar Zill and Irwin), one from Australia (cultivar Gleen) and one from Kenya (cultivar Apple) were evaluated for adaptability at National Horticultural Research Centre, Thika germplasm field.
The trial was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replicates.
Cultivar Zill and Apple significantly out yielded the other two cultivars.
