ISHS Acta Horticulturae 820: VIII International Mango Symposium

MANGO PRODUCTION IN SOUTH AFRICA AS COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE WORLD

Author:   J. Fivaz
Abstract:
According to statistics of the FAO, more than 92 countries worldwide produce mangoes. Although South Africa’s mango industry grew rapidly over the past 15 years, it only produces 0.2% of world production. Exports experienced growth from 1998 to 2002, but declined dramatically thereafter. The main reason for this was the strengthening of the South African currency against the United States Dollar and the Euro, and strong competition of good quality mangoes from Peru, Brazil and Ecuador. Due to the decline in exports the industry is now largely dependent on reduced returns from the sale of processed products. During the 2004/2005 season, a total of 80426 tons was harvested of which only 6.9% was exported. 24.9% was sold on local markets as fresh fruit, 21% was delivered to atchar processors, 13.6% was dried, and 33.6% was processed for juice. The South African Mango Industry is currently experiencing a difficult economic period due to poor returns to producers. This is the result of various factors such as climate, socio-economic situations and national and international marketing trends. The aim of this paper is to present an up-to-date description of the South African Mango Industry, its production and trade, and its future as compared to other mango producing countries worldwide.
