Abstract:
In recent years considerable research effort has been directed towards developing methods of utilizing tree barks.
Some authors have suggested horticultural uses of barks as a mulch material.
The general purpose of our experiment was to check the usefulness of milled pine bark as a material for mulching in gladiolus cultivation.
The pine bark used in the experiment was of two sorts: composted pine bark and fresh, uncomposted pine bark.
The soil surface was covered with a 5 cm thick layer of bark after bulb planting.
The composted pine bark as a mulch can be a substitute for the very well known peat moss in gladiolus culture.
It inhibits weed growth, causes better growth of gladiolus plants and increases the bulb crop.
Fresh bark also promises to be a good mulch material but its effect is limited to inhibition of weed growth.
