PINE BARK AS A SOIL IMPROVER IN GLADIOLUS CULTURE

Author:   H. Grzeszkiewicz
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1978.82.3
Abstract:
Bark can be used as a source of organic substances and add to the soil instead of using manure or peat, which are expensive and in short supply. In the experiments the usefulness of composted, fresh and old bark as a soil conditioner and organic fertilizer was investigated. The bark contained 85% Scotch pine bark and about 15% birch bark. The bark was added at two rates, 20 and 40 l per m2. The addition of bark to sandy loam soil improved water capacity, humidity, increased the amount of organic substances and percent of total nitrogen. All three sorts of bark added to the soil improve the growth and yield of gladiolus plants.
