PEAT AND MINERAL WOOL AS SUBSTRATES FOR CULTIVATION OF MELON

Abstract:
In 1975 and 1976, peat and mineral wool were investigated as substrates for the growing of melons (Cucumis melo L) in the greenhouse. Variety Aroma is a common veriety in Sweden. Cultivation on tables, after a special method that has been developed at Alnarp. A standard nutritional solution was given by drip irrigation to all substrates.

In 1975, peat gave a higher yield (42 %) than mineral wool and also the quality of peat was better.

In 1976, the difference in yield between cultivation on peat and on mineral wool was small. Loose peat gave better results than peat blocks.
